Music instruments from ethnic minorities to be exhibited

Nhan Dan Online - An exhibition of traditional music instruments from Vietnamese ethnic groups will be held in Hanoi from January 29 to February 3, 2009, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

According to Tu Manh Luong, director of the Vietnam Exhibition Centre, the exhibition is part of activities to mark the 80th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the 1,000th anniversary of  Thang Long-Hanoi.

This is the first exhibition on musical instruments of this scale, which aims to introduce to visitors the diversity of Vietnamese musical instruments, so as to hail the traditional culture of Vietnam and preserve the traditional instruments in the community’s spiritual life.

The visitors can see on display on an 800sq.m area hundreds of Vietnamese traditional music instruments, including monochord, bamboo flute, two-chord guitar, 16-chord zither and drums from northern delta and midland provinces as well as unique music instruments of northern mountainous provinces such as cymbals and bamboo panpipe. The instruments come from five main cultural regions of Vietnam, namely northern delta, northern mountainous region, central coastal area, Central highlands and southern Vietnam.

A special area will be reserved for musical instruments of the four types of arts recognized by UNESCO as world cultural heritage, including Gong Music, Court Music, Ca Tru and Quan Ho folk song. During the exhibition, a performance of traditional music instruments, a contest for young players and an exchange between outstanding ethnic minority students will be held.

The exhibition is co-organised by the Vietnam Ethnic Minorities Culture Museum, the National Music Conservatory, and the Vietnam Exhibition Centre.
